Default Re: Sles 11 on xen

So I t took longer then I thought, but I could setup a XenServer 5.5 and installed a sles 11. I had the same problem that I got no gui at the console and was not able to get the gui in a vnc session. Just agrey screen with the mouse cursor but no login screen.

I think the problem is related to the graphics driver that gets tried to load by the display manager. As it seems that XenServer does not provide the guest a graphics adapter, there is no matching device driver that can be loaded. Therefor gdm throws some errors when it gets started and terminates afterwards. As it has terminated, it cannot provide the vnc session the gui via xdmcp.

So what I found is that there is a dummy device derive. So I uses a xorg.conf from a sles domU hosted on a sles dom0 and modified it a little bit. I changed the device driver to dummy, restarted the display manager and now it keeps running and connecting via bnc I get the gui ! So this was the best I could do.

Here is the xorg.conf I have now on my system:

# cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
