Calendar localization formatting

Is there anyway to format how you want the date to look? For example in
our calendars they show dd mon yyyy (1 Sep 2008) or day dd/mm (Mon 1/9).
I'd like it to show Sep 1 2008 or Mon 9/1

Can't seem to find anything in the Admin portlets.
