It sounds like you have a communications problem, but it's hard to say for sure.

I recommend you run the collector in diagnostic mode and look for errors in the resulting log file.
Create the file options.txt in the installation path\Bin directory. edit the file and type diagnostic ,then save the file then start the collection client in diagnostic mode.
One of these should launch the collection client in diagnostic mode:
"C:\Program Files\Novell\Zenworks Asset Management\Bin\cclient.exe" diagnostic
or
"C:\Program Files\Tally Systems Corp\TSCensus\Bin\cclient.exe" diagnostic
from the file menu, start a collection by selecting scan/edit now.
Save the output from both diagnotic windows for reference.
you should be able to identify where the collection client is failing be reviewing which tests fail. If you can't lauch the collection client in diagnostic mode, your installation is corrupt, your access rights to run the client are not high enough or there is a problem in the registry.
Don't forget to delete the options.txt file afterwards.
