SYSPREP on WinXP master image

I have a question about SYSPREP on building Windows XP SP2 master
images. We use eDirectory and Active Direcory, and all desktop
computers are a member of our domain.

How important is SYSPREP to the master build image, and is it
considered an essential step in the build process? Are most people
that use ZENworks imaging also using SYSPREP?
