Default Imaging and VMware - XP doesn't boot after image restore

I'm running a NW 6.5 SP6 server with Zen 7 SP1 IR1 on VMware workstation 6
(latest build) in a testing environment.
I'm booting a VM Windows XP machine with PXE and perform a scripted restore
of image files. Images are restored properly.

When XP boots for the first time ... nothing.
After the VM Bios I only see a dash at the top left of the screen, that's
it.

I tried to do a restore of the images by hand without using the script.
Same problem.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Kind regards,
