Reading Inv from Linux

Without going into details of why. We are trying to read attributes from the Inv database from a Linux server. Having gone through the doco there is a segment which details how to use desktop4.exe to do what we want.

So I guess my question is there an equiv to desktop4.exe for linux? We have stumbled across Isql, but struggling with hoe to issue the syntax.
