A whole lotta .STR files !

I actually looked through this particular forum from start to finish in the hope of finding a similar issue so as not to be a bother to anyone but was surprised to find none. Looks like something is not working right on our system or everyone else has tons of storage space and this is therefore not an issue. Actually I also did a search through Documentation and TID's but could not find anything pertaining to deleting STR files manually.
Here's the problem: Our \Zenworks\Scandir\ directory contains over 486500 .STR files and amounts to over 10.4GB. The volume containing this directory is running low on space and is causing us concern.
1) Would I be right in saying this is not normal? Is it okay to delete these files or at least all the ones that are dated 2007 and older?
2) Should these files be getting deleted automatically and is something not set up right on our Server.
Other than this issue our Zenworks system is working very well. Our Workstation imports, NAL pushdowns, Remote control, all are operating perfectly.
