• NOWS-SBE 2.5 to SB 11 - inplace upgrade?

The question was asked: "Is there a way to take an existing install of SBE 2.5 (with Simba) and
inplace upgrade to the NOWS SB 11 edition?"

Let me first try to clarify the question.

The Novell Open Workgroup Suite Small Business Edition (NOWS SBE) is a
product we can install (i.e. it has a DVD).

The Novell Open Workgroup Suite (NOWS) is a collection of other
    products including SLES and OES.

Novell Open Workgroup Suite for Small Business (NOWS for Small
Business) is NOWS. It has a different name because it has a different
part number and price and is only available to organizations with up to
200 employees. Actually, it is the same part number (SKU) and price as

So, the question becomes: How do I move from NOWS SBE to the current

NOWS SBE was supposed to simplify the installation and management of
your server software. It attempted to do this by:

    1. Providing a scripted install
    2. Providing a management interface (SIMBA)
    3. Imposing standard software configurations.

This involved a lot of custom coding. Initially, even the updates were
customized and needed to be applied via the SIMBA interface. More
recent updates could be applied using standard patching methods however
the system could not be upgraded beyond SLES10-SP3/OES2-SP2.
    See: http://forums.novell.com/novell-prod...-oes2-sp3.html

The current OES version is OES11-SP1 which runs on SLES11-SP2. These
are both 64-bit systems only. Existing 32-bit systems cannot be
upgraded in place and NOWS SBE cannot be upgraded beyond
SLES10-SP3/OES2-SP2. The only option available to NOWS SBE users is a
    new install.

Even with a new install you have a couple of choices:

Option 1. Install a new server (or servers) in the same tree.
NOWS SBE imposed restrictions on your tree structure. The structure
changed somewhat between Version 2.0 and 2.5. and was more of an issue
if you had more than one server. I don't recommend this approach
especially when you have the opportunity to do it right the second time

Option 2. Install new server(s) in a new tree, (Recommended).
We don't often get a second chance to get it right.

In either case the new install will no longer have the SIMBA interface
and you will be able to configure your systems to suit the needs of
your business. OES11-SP1 offers many new features including a single
disk install and the ability to virtualize your servers.

I realize this extra flexibility imposes additional choices and
decisions which, in turn, require a better understanding of the systems
and the software you are installing. Unfortunately, there is no easy
way around it other than perhaps bringing in a consultant to help out.
My suggestion is to take some time and read the documentation (at least
the introductory chapters) before proceeding. Take advantage of the
forums to ask questions and discuss options with others if you are
unsure how to proceed. Remember, we are here to help. All you have to
    do is ask!
