I just completed upgrading of 7 NW 6.5 SP2 servers (in an NCS cluster) to
SP5. The servers are all Dell 2650s with 4GB RAM. Also installed
NW65OS5A and N65NSS5A. After upgrading the first server and rebooting
(RESET SERVER) it hung at "Processing stage 1 loading of nlms". I forced
it to reboot again, same problem. It loads the Dell PERC2 driver and then
the QLogic QL2300 drivers and then hangs at "Processing stage 1 loading of
nlms". I was afraid it was going to be a VERY long morning and then
looked at the STARTUP.NCF file on my 2 test servers that had no problems
with the SP5 upgrade. I noticed on the test servers the QL2300 driver was
being loaded before the PERC2 driver. I tried that on the box I just
upgraded and it came right up. All I did was reverse the order of the
load statements for the HAM drivers so QL2300.HAM loads first. I did that
on remaining 6 servers before installing SP5 and all came up fine.

This problem may only be unique to Dell 2650s with QLogic HBA cards, but
you may want to take note if you are installing SP5 on similar hardware.
Don't know exactly what is going on but as long as it works that's all I
care about. However, if anyone has a theory I'd be interested.

Other than this "glitch" I had no other problems with the upgrades. Now I
just need to see how well the auto memory tuning works with the new
SERVER.EXE. I figure I'll probably have to do some tweaking with Hamish's
great little tool, but I'll give it a few days and see what happens.
