Upgrading to the 7.2.1 client in a cluster environment was a painful
experience. Getting it to recognize cluster volumes took over a month
(with EMC "support") to figure out. In the meantime we had NO backups
because the 7.2.1 client refuses to back up cluster volumes from the
physical server. They MUST be backed up via the virtual server. They
should have allowed "legacy" type backups as an option until we could
get "cluster aware" backups working. Also, since we have an isolated VLAN
for backups, we had to assign an additional secondary IP address to every
cluster volume so the backup server could "see" them. OK, no biggie but
not a word in EMC's docs about how to configure cluster backups if using a
dedicated VLAN for backups. Guess we are the only ones in the world doing
that! How dumb...wanting to keep backup traffic off the primary LAN.

Well, we finally have backups working again after dodging a HUGE bullet
for over a month. Amazing...not a single request to restore anything
during that time (and no hardware failures). If we lost a volume we would
have been hosed BIG TIME!

Now the problem we have is occasional abends (about once a week). It is
always the same:
Novell Netware, V6.5 Support Pack 5 - CPR Release
PVER: 6.50.05
Server PEN-NFC2 halted Tuesday, August 15, 2006 10:00:01.190 pm
Abend 1 on P00: Server-5.70.05-0: Deadlock detected waiting for spinlock
currently owned by CPU 00
Running process: NSREXECD.NLM:a1aba820 Process
Thread Owned by NLM: NSREXECD.NLM

Sometimes the running process may be SAVE.NLM and SAVEFS.NLM, but these
are all components of NetWorker 7.2.1 along with NSREXECD. Always happens
right when a backup kicks off. Since this appears to be an SMP related
problem, I may just disable the 2nd CPU until we figure our why this is
happening. We have a ticket open with EMC and sent them a core dump. It
has been "escalated".

Anyone else out there using Networker (7.2.x) besides Andreas Eckert?
Having any similar problems? BTW Andreas, if you are reading this did you
work out most of your problems with EMC developers?
