6 paper types and one printer

    We have the following situation:
Ten users are sharing one printer. We have 6 different types of paper
(grey, white, with logo, without logo, etc.). The printer has too few paper
    trays for all paper types.
In order to ensure that a print job of a user does not start with the wrong
paper we use the following approach:
The printer is connected to a (simple and old) PC running Windows 95 via
LPT and printer cable. This PC has no other function than to serve the
printer. The PC is connected to the server (PSERVER)via LAN cable like
every other workstation. On this PC NPTWIN95 is running.
Start sequence fort the PC is something like:

    NPTWIN95 ".CN=Kyocera FS1700.OU=XX.O=XXXX"
    PCONSOLE

When a user wants to print, he is starting the print job at his
workstation. Then he must go to the PC at the printer, put the right paper
into the tray and type his personal user number into the PCONSOLE screen.
    Then the print job starts.
    This works quite good.
Now we are changing from NetWare 4.11 to 6.5.
    1. We are not sure whether it will be possible to use the same approach
when we finished the migration to NW6.5.
    2. With some print jobs the pserver abends (reproducible situation, but we
have no idea what is the reason)

Is there another similar solution for NW 6.5 ? (It is crucial that the user
is forced to go to the printer and starts the print job after put in the
    right paper into the tray).

(I have phoned with Novell Germany and asked them how they handle this
situation in their office. They told me that in their office
    - the user goes to the printer and put the right paper into the tray
    - then he goes back to the desk and start the print job
If another user has started another print job in the meantime… that’s bad
    luck…)

    Any idea ?
    Thank you

Re: 6 paper types and one printer

We have a print shop here to handle very big jobs, or jobs that require
special handling that cannot be accomplished via ordinary printers.
All the jobs sent there are held in a spooler and the operator there
directs them to whichever print device with whatever paper/forms/etc
are desired for each job. The LPR name (Printer Name) for this
"printer" is HOLD, rather than the usual PASSTHROUGH.

You might be able to accomplish what you want by doing something
similar with your NDPS printer. The user logged in to that 95
workstation would have to be a printer operator in order to be able to
    release the jobs.

I think you will not have the feedback you would get from the legacy
print system, with messages like "mount form x in printer y", but the
user should already know what forms they want to use, yes?

Another option might be to configure the NDPS printer agent to forward
jobs to a queue. I'm not sure how well the works with the legacy print
forms, but it's something you could investigate.

    Barry,
Thank you for the qick reply. Our present solution seems to be very similar
to your 'print shop' solution. Only that there is no operator at the
printers. The user sends his print job to the printer where it is held
until the user himself mounts the form. While there are several users per
printer the print job owner gets a message on the screen when his print job
is ready to be served: e.g.

    KYOCERA-FS.3800.XX.XXXXXXX needs form USER_19

USER_19 is used as FORM and not the type of paper in order to show on the
PCONSOLE screen whose job is next.

I will investigate the NDPS printer agent tip but I am not shure whether
    this will work.

    Thank you

Right -- your users will have to act as their own operators. Since all
jobs will be held, the user will have to select their own job, mount
whatever form is required, then release the job. I'm just not sure
about any notification messages. I don't use those here.

Re: 6 paper types and one printer

    Barry,
do you know any similar (more up to date) solution. As I wrote: PSERVER
crashes too often (once per week as an average). How do you manage it with
your operator ? Are you printers directly connected to a server ? Which
software does he use for getting the print jobs on his screen, manage them
and inform the users that the jobs are printed ?

Re: 6 paper types and one printer

We aren't using PSERVER, that's for sure. We have a standard NDPS
installation. We actually have two such print shops. The main one has
a custom interface that's made specifically for this task. But the
other one is quite simple (it's a big label printer) and something you
could replicate yourself. The printer agent is configured to service a
traditional queue, which is configured to hold all jobs. The operator
just uses the printer/queue interface in Windows (Control
Panel|Printers) to find the job and release it. PCONSOLE would also
    work the same way.
