    iPrint - Macs - Bonjour?

This is for the iPrint developer that frequents this forum...

Had the iPrint team ever considered publishing the iPrint printers via
Apple's Bonjour? It would seem like a very eloquent solution where our Mac
users could simply add/pick Bonjour published printers directly in the OS X
printing GUI instead of having to use the web-interface of iPrint.

    best,
    Jeff

There are actually several iPrint developers that frequent this forum. :)

We have considered adding functionality to the Windows, Linux and Mac
clients where they would discover iPrint Maps or install pages via DNS
Service Discovery, which is part of Apple's Bonjour (the other part
being multicast DNS). That would allow an administrator to make maps or
printer list web pages discoverable by the iPrint clients, which would
make it easy for users to find the web page that they should use to
install a printer. Basically, the user would click on the iPrint icon
in the tray (windows/Linux) or on the menu bar (Mac) and one of the menu
options would be "Find iPrint printers ->" which would show the list of
discovered or hard-coded web pages. The user would select the page
which would open a browser window right to that page and the printers
could be installed as usual. Relatively easy for us to implement and it
fits within the iPrint paradigm of installing printers from a web page.

I'm not sure if that's exactly what you're suggesting or not... perhaps
you're talking about publishing something that Macs could discover when
installing a printer from System Preferences or something else entirely.
We haven't spent any time looking into that to see how feasible it is.

Anyways, I'd love to add this feature when I get some free time. Right
now we're very busy with adding Vista driver support and migration
support to Open Enterprise Server 2.
    Hope that helps.

Re: iPrint - Macs - Bonjour?

You idea is interesting and I hope you have a chance to get back to it at
some point. We're desperate for a Vista iPrint solution so that's an Ok
    priority to me.

My idea is, as you mention, to publish something that Macs could discover
when installing a printer from System Preferences, even if this discovery
results in them being sent to the iPrint webpage. So either have the
Bonjour-enabled iPrint printers show up and the user selects them as a Mac
user normally does, or have a "printer" that installs the iPrint client, and
redirects them to the iPrint page.

It would also be helpful if the iPrint printer had pass-through
authentication so that when a user logs-in to the Mac (authenticated from
eDir), the credentials pass on to the iPrint client. This saves a second
login and/or the need to save those credentials in the keychain.

    best,
    Jeff
