We use the %login_name variable to map a users home drive during login. Because the login script variables are tied to a DOS history, we must always make our user names 8 characters or we need to reset the user directory to the first 8 characters of the username and make sure that there are no other usernames with the same first 8 characters.

We have done this for years, but now I am being pressed to find a solution that doesn't require that the username and/or directory name be restricted to 8 characters. Is there a different way to map a user's drive during login? Any other solutions for getting a user mapped to their drive. We have many machines that are used by multiple users, so a static mapping on a local machine won't work.
