I was on vacation all last week and hadn't heard about it until today,
but someone broke into our little city zoo (smallest accredited zoo in
the world!) and killed a mated pair of black swans and a pair of
ceropsis geese about a week ago.

The swans have been a staple at the zoo as long as I can remember.
The male black swan was 27 years old. He had been a bachelor until
about 2 years ago, when another pair of swans had a nest of cygnets and
he bonded to one of them. She had laid their first nest not to long
ago. The zookeepers pointed the two of them out as an example of not
fully understanding how animals communicate and relate to one another.

The geese were great to watch. They detested each other, but they hated
the rest of the world more.

There is a reward fund established, along with a fund to help the zoo
find money to replace the birds.

I would post the links to the stories in the local paper, but the level
of profanity in the comments in response to them make them beyond the
allowable here.

So, it is a sad day here in Emporia.
