I'm currently doing some self-training on SLES/OES using a test server which is in its own tree. I'm able to make an SSH connection to the server from my Windows XP workstation using puTTY; however, I can't authenticate to it once the SSH connection is established.

Here's what the puTTY login screen shows:

* login as: root
* Sent username "root"
* root@'s password:
* Access denied
* root@'s password:
* Access denied
* root@'s password:

-There are no messages in /var/log messages.
-root authenticates via the /etc/passwd file.
-The same thing happens when I attempt to log in with my backup user account, toor.
-I'm looking at a possible PAM configuration issue, but PAM's a bit over my head right now.
-I can access iManager on the test server with no problems using a Web browser. This is from the same Windows XP workstation from which I'm having the puTTY problem but using the .admin.novell user rather than root.
-I can also authenticate to the server and view its tree with Console1 and NWAdmin using .admin.novell.

Ideas? Suggestions?
