This is probably not the ideal forum, given it's not specifically OES, but
it's as close as I can get.

A student, either inadvertently or maliciously, connected two ports on the
same switch with
a straight through patch lead. This caused what seems to have been a
virtual meltdown of the
entire network. Clearly that's not acceptable, it took 10 minutes to
isolate the source switch
and then locate the problem, during which time all manner of Bad Things were

I would like to do something to prevent this happening again. Aside from
summary executions what
configuration steps can I take at the switches to stop such a misconnection
taking out the entire
