Folks,

I have an intermittent problem (the worse kind). Every second or third time the server is restarted novell-named does not start with the following message in the system log;

error: novell-named failed to start, check if novell-xregd is running!

I have found the function that is generating this message in /etc/init.d/novell-named, it is the following section;

function start_check
{
/etc/init.d/novell-xregd status >/dev/null 2>&1
if [ $? -ne 0 ] ; then
echo "error: novell-named failed to start, check if novell-xregd is running!";
echo "error: novell-named failed to start, check if novell-xregd is running! " >>/var/log/messages
rc_failed 1
rc_status -v
rc_exit
fi
/etc/init.d/micasad status >/dev/null 2>&1
if [ $? -ne 0 ] ; then
echo "warning: micasad is not running, loading novell-named with credentials from file";
echo "warning: micasad is not running, loading novell-named with credentials from file" >>/var/log/messages
#rc_failed 1
#rc_status -v
#rc_exit
fi

}

I'm not a linux whiz, so I'm kind of at a loss as to what is going on. The fact that named will start the majority of the time is an additional puzzle. My guess is that it is a timing thing in the startup sequence, but I don't know how to control that (put a pause in before novell-named is started) or even if that is a realistic possibility for a solution.

Any assistance from better minds than mine would be greatly appreciated!
