I'm to blame for this one! The CIFS log file /var/log/cifs/cifs.log was getting really big. (this says something about how CIFS has been running here....) So big it was taking several minutes to load into gedit so I could look at the errors at the bottom. S0 I decided to copy the log to a new location, delete it and create a new, empty log file.

Now the log is no longer being written. I checked the file privileges of the copied file, and changed the new one to be the same (640), same owner (root), nothing. The CIFS messages are being written to the main system log, but I'm feeling a little sheepish about this.

Anyone know how to restart the CIFS logging with a new, empty file?
