    Computer for my Mom

Mom has an old Gateway (because the store was near her house) and she is a
Professor at some sort of collage. (sic)

So I'm thinking she should get an academic discount......where should I shop
and what should I buy her? She mostly grades paperwork on it (emailed word
docs). Should I get a Mac? Maybe a Mini?

She doesn't even do wireless now and I don't know that she cares
    to.....laptop maybe though?

If she's not beholden to a M$ environment - go with a Mac, and if she needs
mobility, get a Macbook, otherwise a nice iMac will work just peachy.

Faculty discounts are typically through the college book store.

Her collage [sic] probably has negotiated academic discounts with Dell,
Apple and/or HP. You may be able to find out the particulars (including
whether the academic discount ends up being more expensive than shopping
around for a deal) on their respective websites.

A few weeks ago my GF bought a Macbook which she absolutely loves. That
same week, FW bought a very fancy HP Pavilion which has already had to
be reimaged because it caught a virus.

Yeah, I know, if you get a virus on your Windows box it's your own fault
for not downloading and installing half a dozen protective programs and
keeping them updated. Do you want to be responsible for that, though?

    Excellent point!

I think we have a Mac in mind now.

Should I do a mini or laptop?

    Re: Computer for my Mom

If she needs to be mobile, go with the Macbook.
I have one and love it.

If mobility is not an issue go with an iMac.

Mac Mini is okay, but you can't expand it. I found that with mine that I ended up have a cluttered desk anyway with external USB devices, etc....

A lot of it depends on what she also wants to do with it.

I use Netflix and the last that I checked, the instant play only works with Windoze.
However, if this is an issue then you can get one of the Netflix boxes to hook to your computer and then this is no longer an issue.

Check HP's smallbiz website; I received a flier from them this morning for a
15.4" laptop classed as "business" for $399 after a hundred dollar rebate.
Model in the ad was a n HP Compaq 6735s business laptop. May not be perfect,
but the price is sure right......

Someone here said the same thing. But the premium may be worth it to go for
    virus-free mac?

    Re: Computer for my Mom

Nothing is virus-free, but without the premium you can get that system, wipe
    vista, and load openSuse 11.1........
Just sayin', the "premium" for a locked-in propriatary system just isn't
worth it to me, especially since their latest "patchs" seem to have broken
    more than they fixed....
