I am switching my 5 Netware 6.5 SP7 servers to use XNTPD instead of TIMESYNC in preparation for a migration to OES 2 SP1 Linux.

I have an internal ntpd service running on an independent BSD server.

I am following the instructions in Cool Solutions: Setting Up XNTPD Time on NetWare 6.5 SP5 Servers

When I unload timesync and load xntpd I start getting edirectory errors about not being able to locate my other (Netware) servers.

I edited sys:/etc/ntp.conf to include:
server lohman.wsfcu.org prefer
server 1.us.pool.ntp.org
...except on my lohman server, which prefers (the BSD server running ntpd).

What I discovered within a short while was that this error condition would clear, and synchronization would resume, within 6 minutes or so. I satisfied myself that replica operations and SLP were not adversely affected by this change despite the initial error messages.
