We also use ESX (3.5 and VSphere 4)

(SLES was late to the game with virtualization)

Right now, Vmware ESX (now it's called: vsphere)

Have not used version 4 yet, though. We're still at 3.5i

Also in terms of performance, for XEN is usually faster (IMO) in terms of boot time and disk performance.

However, it's management abilities are sorely lacking, IMO. As far as what "ships with it".

I am not referring to Citrix XEN, but the XEN in SLES 10

We just took advantage of VMware special promotions to upgrade our three
platinum servers in Chicago to platinum plus and the one standard server
in Milwaukee to advanced. Now I just gotta take the time to upgrade from
    3.5 to 4.

You might want to hurry ...

    http://www.boche.net/blog/index.php/...phere-upgrade/

MS support for SQL Server 2005 SP2 ends in about 10 weeks, VMWare does
not support VC2.5 on SP3 ..... you either have your infrastructure
platform management platform on an unsupported database, or an
unsupported infrastructure management platform .... fun, fun, fun.

Working on this issue with one of my clients currently.

Also, there's some upcoming change with the editions of vmware and support.

Something about the Advanced edition is going away or something and if you upgrade now,you can get the upgrade, but then the upgrade is not supported soon after that or something.

I'll see if I can get more details. Basically EMC wants more money and is going to force everyone to get Advanced Plus or whatever it is.
