Not really. When you "buy" something at the subsidized price you agree
to a contract extension to guarantee that you pay for the "something".
In the case of DTV you are "buying" an expensive receiver for way below
cost.

The only unfair thing is providers typically don't discount service if
you buy your own equipment which makes no sense. For example customer
"A" gets subsidized equipment and pays say $50/month for a certain class
of service. Customer "B" owns their own equipment and pays $50/month for
the same service as "A".
