Hi,

We encountered an issue affecting both our Novell DNS servers - NCS01-IPSERV and IPDR. Each had halted and was prompting for someone to press any key before they would close (negating failover in the case of NCS01-ISERV). The error was "assertion failure". I did a bit of research and found references to people encountering this problem as far back as 2007. Apparently it is caused by attempting to resolve a site that returns a 0 TTL for resource records. There is an updated version of NAMED.NLM which resolves the issue:

DNS update for NetWare 6.5

I have checked the version we are currently using and this update superceded it.

I have also had a look in the log files sys:named.run (IPDR) and ipserv:named.run (NCS01-IPSERV):

We downloaded the updated named.nlm, however when we deployed it it stopped DNS working altogether so we had to roll it back.

Has anyone else encountered these issues and if so how have you resolved it. The assertion failure error is hitting both our DNS servers several times a week, sometimes several times a day.

thanks

James
