Exclamation NALShell.dll causing Windows Explorer to crash

    Hi,

we have many complaints from our employees that they get the error message "Windows Explorer stopped working" every once in a while. They can either close the error dialog or click "Restart Windows Explorer". In both ways Windows Explorer crashes (taskbar and desktop disappear) und restarts immediately.

I looked into the Event Log on some of the machines and it's always the same error:

    Code:
Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: explorer.exe, Version: 6.1.7601.17567, Zeitstempel: 0x4d672ee4
Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: NalShell.dll, Version: 11.1.0.10525, Zeitstempel: 0x4e12dadf
    Ausnahmecode: 0xc0000005
    Fehleroffset: 0x000000000000b991
    ID des fehlerhaften Prozesses: 0x13cc
    Startzeit der fehlerhaften Anwendung: 0x01cc8a5462f6e088
    Pfad der fehlerhaften Anwendung: C:\Windows\explorer.exe
Pfad des fehlerhaften Moduls: C:\Program Files (x86)\Novell\ZENworks\bin\NalShell.dll
    Berichtskennung: eeb76e45-f647-11e0-8a0e-1cc1dec0cfb2
Our systems are running on Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1 with ZENagent 11.1 installed.

We need a fix for that please! :-/

P.S.: Sorry for the german error log but I don't have the time atm to translate it.

    I would recommend an SR.
There may be a patch available for this specific issue.

We have seen this issue in the past with Windows 7 x64 machines. Here's our solution:

Folder Options -> View -> Un-Check Launch folder windows in a seperate process.

Thanks, we will give this a try! But wasn't this setting supposed to increase the system's stability since Windows Explorer crashes wouldn't effect every opened Explorer window? :-/

We got rid of most of the explorer crashes with this workaround but unfortunately we still experience it on several machines from time to time.

    Hi,

We have exactly the same problem. I looked for a TID about it but I did not find.
Have you been able to correct the problem ?
Did you open a SR about it ?

    Thank you.

Re: NALShell.dll causing Windows Explorer to crash

we just came across the same problem in 11.0 - also german but thats just a side note i think

    Win7 Prof x64
    SP1
    german
    virtualized in ESX5

So far, we have this problem only on our virtual machines which have the Microsoft Hotfix for KB2550978 ("0x0000007B" Stop error after you replace an identical iSCSI network adapter in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or in Windows 7 SP1) installed - which is essential for our Citrix provisioning.

as workaround I unregistered the nalshell.dll which is unnecessary on our provisioned machines. nevertheless I hope this bug is fixed in 11.2

Re: NALShell.dll causing Windows Explorer to crash

We recently started seeing this on one site, a bit surprising since we have ~2000 computers in ZCM.
After upgrading to 10.3.4 we hoped the problem would be gone, but I've started getting reports that it still happens from time to time.

This is from one of these reports (unfortunately in Swedish):

    Code:
Felet uppstod i programmet med namn: Explorer.EXE, version 6.1.7601.17567, tidsstmpel 0x4d672ee4
Felet uppstod i modulen med namn: NalShell.dll, version 10.3.4.13489, tidsstmpel 0x4eb09802
    Undantagskod: 0xc000000d
    Felfrskjutning: 0x00000000000acebd
    Process-ID: 0x1ac4
    Programmets starttid: 0x01cd4793be0408ba
    Skvg till program: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE
Skvg till modul: C:\Program Files (x86)\Novell\ZENworks\bin\NalShell.dll
    Rapport-ID: 1da453a3-b3a1-11e1-b834-1cc1deaceaa3
I haven't witnessed this first hand, haven't been able to recreate it on 10.3.3 or 10.3.4.

Anyone else still seeing this on 10.3.4?

We're using 64-bit Windows 7 in case it matters.
