Question Which is the best protocol to use?

    hi all
As Im not an avid Mac user i ask the question, if one had a choice, which would be the best protocol to use, CIFS or AFP? This would be on a OES2 clustered enviroment.

I look forward to your thoughts.

    cheers

I would say to use AFP. It is the native mac protocol and OES2 or OES11
will leave CIFS in the dust as far as speed. I have spent a lot of time
testing this. I am not sure how many afp users you have.

    hi
yes afp would be my choice for sure and im aware that cifs/smb can be very slow and hungry but as we only have a few mac
users less than 10 at the moment we have just been getting by with webdav. not kool. so this is the solution we need to make
life a bit better for all of us.
i need some technical justification for afp before we install the protocol, so any data on the pros and cons of the 2 protocols
    would be grand.

    cheers

Personally if I had a choice I'd use AFP for Macs and CIFS for Windows.
Basically use the native protocol for each.

There are however a couple of reasons you may want to consider using
    CIFS for both:

    1) AFP doesn't support Dynamic Storage Technology whereas CIFS does
    2) using CIFS gives you one protocol to support

CIFS does have it's issues for Mac users though, particularly with OS X
Lion where Apple changed how they implemented SMB support (dropping
Samba in favour of their own code). The latest Lion update, 10.7.3,
includes fixes that "Address compatibility issues with Microsoft Windows
    file sharing".

    HTH.
