Of course it is different in MAD; if you look at the attribute within
MAD you'll find that the User side of the relationship doesn't even
exist but instead is calculated when accessed. Unless things have
changed you cannot actually set the user side because it is not really
there.

Normally, using the "normal" tools (ConsoleOne, iManager, IDM) the
management of reciprocal attributes is done on the fly, but LDAP does
not do this by default because that is not very LDAP-like. The term for
the functionality that does handle this for you is "write managed", but
I do not know if you can explicitly tell that to happen via LDAP.

One way you can handle this automatically is with an IDM driver config
(null, or loopback, or whatever) that matches these up as needed on the
fly, or you can use scripts that are made to detect inconsistencies for
normal attributes and match them up.

Different APIs may have ways of enabling the write managed features like
iManager and ConsoleOne, but I do not do that kind of
scripting/programming so I do not know of a way to do that in any language.
