I have never seen anything like this.

An ldapsearch will return the first couple of records, but then it hangs
and stays that way unless I quit it (so far I've run the search for half
an hour.

ldapsearch -h 127.0.0.1 -D <credentials> -w <password> -b <base record>
<attribute>

Here is the output of top
