why Protect depends on supported file systems ?

I have a workload running ocfs2 file systems, but I can't protect them
because Protect does not support ocfs2. So my question here is if
PlateSpin Protect does the Block based replication.. then why it depends
on certain file systems e.g ext3/4, xfs, reiserfs and NTFS.
