To simplify, we have a standalone backup DELL Workstation with two
drives together in a RAID 0 configuration. (/var and /usr are on these
drives) We purchased a new 6TB server rated hard drive thinking that we
better replace those two older drives to be safe. We haven't seen any
obvious errors on the server but upon trying to copy the /var mount over
to the new drive I received the following errors.

Create new mounts /mnt/newvar and /mnt/newusr for the new partitions on
the new drive.
init 1
cp -apx /var/* /mnt/newvar

cp: reading '/var/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/nds.01': Input/output
error
cp: failed to extend '/mnt/newvar/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/nds.01:
Input/Output error
cp: reading '/var/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/NDO.01': Input/output
error
cp: failed to extend '/mnt/newvar/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/NDO.01:
Input/Output error
cp: reading '/var/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/123.nds': Input/output
error
cp: failed to extend
'/mnt/newvar/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/123.nds: Input/Output error
cp: reading '/var/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/1BE.nds': Input/output
error
cp: failed to extend
'/mnt/newvar/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/1BE.nds: Input/Output error
cp: reading '/var/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/1BF.nds': Input/output
error
cp: failed to extend
'/mnt/newvar/opt/novell/eDirectory/data/dib/1BF.nds: Input/Output error

Now normally don't Input/Output errors mean an underlying disk problem?
However, is that problem really on just the eDiretory/data/dib folder?
I'm currently copying over /usr to /mnt/newusr which is much larger and
contains disk based backups that are less important as we can rebuild
them.

Did I miss something else that could be locking the dib even after the
init 1? I can't say that I've even replaced a drive like this before as
we normally run RAID5 or virtualized.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm leaving this position in 4 more
days and I want to make certain that I leave my colleagues with a stable
platform. I have really appreciated the help that the Novell community
has provided to me over the years. I've tried to help myself when I
can.
